Quick leg-breaks with a different seam position brought about Yuzvendra Chahal’s redemption in India’s comprehensive 48-run win over South Africa in the third T20I in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. After being ineffective in the first two games, Chahal struck back with three wickets that were key to India’s victory in what was their must-win game to keep the series alive.

“I was trying to bowl a little too quick and sliders in the last two games. I spoke to (bowling coach) Paras (Mhambrey) Sir and the other coaches about it. In this game too, I tried to bowl quick leg-breaks but with a different seam position,” Chahal, adjudged Man of the Match, said at the post-match presentation.

“I look to turn and get the ball to dip. I couldn’t do that the last time, so they were able to hit through the line. I tried to get some turn and change the line of the ball this time around and was also trying to bowl to my strengths.

“In the last game too, there was some help for the spinners. But I didn’t bowl that well,” he added.

Chahal got those wickets in the middle overs on Tuesday. In the first two matches, South Africa had exploited the middle overs to their advantage.

“When you get wickets in the middle overs, the pressure is on the batting side,” Chahal said. “Batsmen try a lot of sweeps and reverse-sweeps these days, so we have to be prepared for that too as bowlers.”

Recording his first international victory as captain, Rishabh Pant was certainly a relieved man.

“I had talked about execution and that’s what we saw in this game from both batsmen and bowlers.

“We thought we were about 15 runs short, but then, the bowlers then did a fantastic job,” Pant said.
