Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma put in a scintillating show at the Wanderers in Johannesburg as India wrapped up the four-match T20I series 3-1.
Deciding to bat, Samson and Tilak’s unbeaten centuries helped India reach 283/1, their highest T20I total overseas. Arshdeep Singh then got into the act, providing three vital breakthroughs to reduce South Africa to 10/4 in the first three overs.
The hosts never recovered from the jolts despite brief resistance from Tristan Stubbs and David Miller. Even Marco Jansen’s valiant effort was not enough as India pulled off a 135-run victory.
Samson and Tilak notched up their second century of the series and this was only the third instance of two batters scoring hundreds in a T20I. While Man of the Series Tilak reached the landmark off 41 balls, Samson took 10 more deliveries to get there.
The pair stitched together a 210-run unbroken partnership off 93 balls. Samson remained unbeaten on 109 off 56 balls and Tilak on 120 off 47. A total of 23 sixes were clobbered during the India innings.
It was a brutal display by the second-wicket pair and none of the bowlers were spared. The execution and timing were perfect and it seemed like the two were out to smash all records on the day.
For Tilak, it was his second consecutive century following his 107 not out in Centurion two days ago.
Samson had been dismissed for ducks in the previous two matches following his 107 in the opening match in Durban. He made up for his lapses with another entertaining knock which gave them the impetus early in the innings. The opener now has three centuries in his last five innings.
The opening pair of Samson and Abhishek Sharma put on 73 in the Powerplay overs, the latter making 36 off 18 with four sixes and two boundaries.
