The 10-wicket hammering against Australia in the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy has also underlined how massive managing Jasprit Bumrah’s workload will be in the remaining three Tests.

With the other quicks falling short of giving Bumrah the support he needed in the day-night Test in Adelaide, the presence of senior pacer Mohammed Shami would have been ideal for Team India. But, till late on Sunday evening, it’s still not certain when Shami will be leaving for Australia.

Sources in the BCCI said it’s the 34-year-old’s call at the moment as to when exactly he wishes to depart. India captain Rohit Sharma, however, categorically mentioned that the “door is open for Shami to come and play any time.”

“We are just monitoring him (Shami) because while playing (in) the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he got some swelling in his knee, which hampered his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very careful as we don't want to bring him here and then he pulls up sore or something happens.

"We want to be more than 100 per cent sure with him because it has been a long time (since he has been out). We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring him, so we’ll take a call based on what those guys feel. They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs.

“But the door is open for him to come and play anytime," Rohit said.

As things stand, Shami will most likely play till the end of Bengal's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign. The Bengal camp dismissed talks of any swelling in Shami's knee while playing in the ongoing national T20 tournament.

"There hasn't been any knee swelling whatsoever. It was only during the Madhya Pradesh game that Shami felt a little discomfort in his waist. But he bowled thereafter.

"He's set to play tomorrow (Monday)'s pre-quarterfinal clash against Chandigarh (in Bengaluru). If we advance, in all likelihood, he'll feature in those matches too," a Bengal team source stated.
