If Virat Kohli isn’t fit, Suryakumar Yadav at No.3

Can the return of all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes revitalise the hosts after T20 drubbing?

Both India and England will look to sort out their shortcomings keeping in mind next year’s 50-over World Cup when they clash in the first one-dayer of the three-match series at The Oval in London on Tuesday.

India would obviously be in a better frame of mind, having won the just-concluded T20I series and coming quite close to whitewashing the Jos Buttler-led side. However, the return of all-rounder and Test captain Ben Stokes along with Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow, heroes of England’s unforgettable Birmingham Test win over India recently, should strengthen the hosts’ batting line-up in particular.

“We’ll be looking at them to bring in that energy, which they’ve had in the Test matches of late. They’ve had a great summer, but they still want to keep building on that,” England’s white-ball head coach Matthew Mott said.

India, however, may have to bench the under-scanner Virat Kohli for Tuesday’s game as he reportedly sustained a groin strain during the third and final T20I at Trent Bridge on Sunday. That said, with options at their disposal, the Indian team management may not be too worried with the uncertainty over Kohli as the former captain’s lean patch has only got extended.

At the same time, a little bit of time off the game could be of help to Kohli as well, as he has a scope to come back afresh.

If Kohli is unavailable, Suryakumar Yadav could bat at No.3 with captain Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan set to open. Shreyas Iyer could be India’s No.4, though it won’t be too unwise to promote ’keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant up the order.

Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur are the likely all-rounders in the XI. India, however, need to be careful and prudent in finalising their bowling attack.

After their new-found attacking gameplan in the T20Is, it remains to be seen how the Indian players fare in the ODIs.
