Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, among the architects of India’s series-levelling win in the fourth T20I, perished cheaply with only Suryakumar Yadav (61 off 45 balls) making a significant contribution.

A steady drizzle, thereafter, made the task tougher for India’s bowlers as the West Indies comfortably chased down a 166-run target to register an eight-wicket win in the fifth and final T20I at Lauderhill in Florida on Sunday. With this, they also sealed the series 3-2 — their first series win over India in six years.

In reply to India’s 165/9, Brandon King (85 not out) and Nicholas Pooran (46) tonked the visitors’ bowlers to all corners as the Windies cruised home with 12 balls to spare. Arshdeep Singh had once again accounted for Kyle Mayers early in the run chase, but the response from King and Pooran was simply emphatic.

King and Pooran had a strokeful stand but did not take any risk against Kuldeep Yadav. Hardik Pandya’s decision to give Axar Patel the ball as late as the 15th over was baffling.

The pitch did have something in it for the spinners as some of the balls gripped while a few kept low. Akeal Hosein (2/24) made fair use of it after India opted to bat first, foxing Jaiswal in the opening over before Gill’s decision to not review the lbw decision earned the Windies left-arm spinner his second wicket.

Surya and the impressive Tilak Varma helped India progress after the openers’ early departure. But Roston Chase (1/25), returning to the XI, broke the stand with a wonderful return catch to dismiss Varma.
