A five-member delegation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will land in Karachi on Tuesday for an inspection ahead of next year's Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
The ICC team will discuss the tentative schedule of the tournament which was prepared and sent by the Pakistan Cricket Board to them some months back.
Top officials of the ICC will be part of the delegation. Security manager David Mucker and head of events Chris Tetley have previously visited Pakistan on three occasions since April. However, this delegation will see changes in personnel since Tetley is learnt to have put in his papers after the T20 World Cup in the US and the West Indies.
Andy Atkinson, the ICC pitch consultant, had also visited Pakistan on three different occasions since April.
While the PCB expect India to play all their matches in Lahore, it is likely that Rohit Sharma's men will not tour Pakistan. The ICC and PCB may have to adopt a hybrid model in such a situation, similar to last year's Asia Cup, with the India matches being played in the UAE or Sri Lanka.
The ICC's approval for the tournament includes a contingency plan to host some games outside Pakistan if necessary. This aspect will also feature in their discussions.
The delegation would inspect the ongoing construction work in Karachi and the team hotel arrangements before flying to Islamabad and Lahore on a similar mission. They will end their visit on September 21.
The visit comes in the backdrop of local media reports suggesting that renovation at the three venues — National Stadium in Karachi, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, and Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore — is behind schedule. The PCB, however, remains confident that the work will conclude in time.
The renovation is an attempt to provide world-class facilities and enhanced experiences for fans, players, officials, and broadcasters alike.
The Champions Trophy has been scheduled between February 19 and March 9 and a budget of $65 million has been approved by the ICC for the eight-team global event.
