There were messages of encouragement for the team that they may need now.

India today crashed out of the World Cup, losing to New Zealand by 18 runs.

Playing on the reserve day after yesterday's Old Trafford show was washed out, New Zealand posted 239 for a loss of 8 wickets.

India had to make 240, but in the third ball in the 49th over, it lost its last wicket with 221 on the board.

India and England started the World CUp as favourtes. In that sense, the Kiwis' win today is a stunner.

Till yesterday, even after the washout, fans on Twitter posted about how great the chances were for an India win. If the match today had been a washout, India would have qualified. When the team walked out the field yesterday and today, it was at the top of the tally table. New Zealand was fourth.

After losing five wickets cheap and quick, India seemed to have got back its composure with Ravindra Jadeja and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the middle.

Jadeja scored 79 off 59 balls, and Dhoni clocked a 50 in 72 balls.

But their departure foretold the quickly approaching end to India's World Cup campaign.

Some Indian fans blamed Dhoni for not finishing the show and taking the team to the final. Others found their funny bone in the middle of what seemed like a national crisis unfolding on screens for some time.

Former cricketer Deep Dasgupta saluted the Black Caps.

A Pakistan fan reminded India that the tea cup given to pilot Abhinandan Varthaman when he was in captivity in the neighbouring country was what India should be given today.

Stand-up satirist Kunal Kamra, whose love of taking potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah is well-known, found a correlation between India's World Cup wins and Congress governments at the Centre.

The Congress, whose government of alliance in Karnataka is capitulating almost as India's batting top order did today, tweeted out a message of support to the team.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted after the match, saiyng that the result was 'disappointing' but that Team India had shown fighting spirit.

The Kiwis will play the winner of the Australia versus England match that is tomorrow.

The final is on July 14 at Lord's.

Cricketer Virender Sehwag, who had posted a photo of well-chewed finger nails on Twitter while the match was on, also congratulated New Zealand.
