A Twitter user slammed Gough saying Sharma’s dismissal was “worst umpiring at its best”.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma was adjudged caught behind by third umpire Michael Andrew Gough in the match today against West Indies and it set off a small Twitter storm.

Sharma appeared in fine touch after having smashed a six and a boundary in the first six overs after India opted to bat. However, his troubles began when West Indies bowler Kemar Roach got one to swing into him. The Windies went to appeal for ‘caught behind’ as it appeared that Sharma might have got an inside-edge onto the wicketkeeper.

However, on-field umpire Richard Illingworth ruled it not-out only to see West Indies captain Jason Holder send it upstairs for a DRS call. Holder, bowler Roach and the fielders in the slip-cordon appeared confident that the ball had taken the edge, but Sharma wasn't.

The replays were said to be inconclusive. The Snicko had spikes on it as the ball crossed the bat but it wasn't providing conclusive evidence as to whether the ball brushed the bat or Rohit's pad. The third umpire Michael Gough ruled it out only after a couple of replays and Sharma walked off the field disappointed.

Unconvinced with the umpire’s decision, both cricketers and fans poured their rage out on social media.

Die-hard Rohit Sharma fans were inconsolable and vented their anguish against TV umpire Michael Gough in the form of jokes and memes. Some fans, however, even edited the umpire's bio on Wikipedia to reflect the inccident.

Others took the decision in their stride said India will have to win the World Cup for Rohit Sharma.
