Hosts 'still ahead' on turners: Spinner Ajaz Patel on India vs New Zealand 3rd Test

'India still have the wood on us when it comes to playing on turning wickets. And traditionally, the Indian batters have done well on turning surfaces,' Ajaz, who took a ten-for in the first innings when India and New Zealand last played a Test at the Wankhede three years ago, said on Wednesday

New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel believes India are still a superior side when playing on spin-friendly tracks, though the visitors have already won the Test series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

“India still have the wood on us when it comes to playing on turning wickets. And traditionally, the Indian batters have done well on turning surfaces,” Ajaz, who took a ten-for in the first innings when India and New Zealand last played a Test at the Wankhede three years ago, said on Wednesday.

“Their skill-set is very vast and for us as a spin group, it’s about being able to control what we can and making sure we can apply pressure for long periods of time and deliver the best balls on a given surface.”

To register a series sweep, the visitors need to adjust to the Wankhede’s red-soil pitch, where spinners should have more assistance than they had in Pune.

“The red clay is different, so we have to adapt quickly,” head coach Gary Stead said.
