BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that Virat Kohli’s decision to quit T20 captaincy led to the selectors being forced to hand over the ODI leadership to Rohit Sharma.

“When he decided to quit as T20 captain in September, I had personally spoken to him and requested (him) to continue. But he said he had made up his mind and couldn’t change his decision. The selectors felt that they cannot have two white ball captains in two white ball formats. That’s too much,” the former India captain told The Telegraph on Thursday.

Sourav said Kohli agreed with the decision to appoint Rohit as white ball captain during the selection committee meeting on Wednesday. “He has agreed to Rohit as captain. He understood the BCCI’s and the selectors’ point of view.”

But why didn’t Kohli make an announcement on social media like he had done when he stepped down from T20 captaincy? “I cannot answer that. It’s his choice.”

Sourav felt there wouldn’t be any problems between the two (Kohli and Rohit) in the dressing room. “They get along very well. Nothing to worry about... Both want Indian cricket to reach great heights and be the best in the world.”
