Shubman Gill (84) and Lockie Ferguson (4/28) delivered in either halves for Gujarat Titans in their smart 14-run win over Delhi Capitals at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Saturday.
After the Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl first, Shubman’s well-compiled knock, that came off just 46 balls, helped the Titans post a challenging total of 171 for 6.
The Capitals were making steady progress in their reply, but none of them could convert their starts. Courtesy Ferguson’s timely strikes, the Titans could restrict them to 157 for 9.
The Titans have now won both their matches in their maiden IPL season. Captain Hardik Pandya too had a decent game, contributing 31 with the bat and taking a wicket — after a long time — as well. That too, off his very first ball of the game.
A successful IPL season is crucial for Shubman in order to stage a Team India comeback, particularly with the T20 World Cup scheduled this October. Shubman’s start to this IPL was forgettable as he perished for nought in the Titans’ opening game. But the 22-year-old was quick to make amends and came up with a much better effort on Saturday.
He also got good support from Hardik as the duo stitched crucial 65 runs for the third wicket.
Shubman’s knock featured six boundaries and four maximums before he departed off the bowling of Khaleel Ahmed (2/34).
Later, New Zealand quick Ferguson worked up good pace. Ferguson’s four wickets included that of Capitals captain Rishabh Pant. Pant’s dismissal was certainly one of the turning points of the game.
Mohammed Shami too picked up two wickets.
