Jay Shah, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, has to decide within a week whether he wants to take up the chairman’s position at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Greg Barclay, the current chair, confirmed to the ICC board on Tuesday that he will not stand for a third term and will step down at the end of his tenure in November.
Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024,” the ICC said in a media release.
Shah has been widely tipped to take over from Barclay but he will then have to sacrifice one year’s term as BCCI secretary. His current three-year tenure ends in October 2025 following which he will have to go into a cooling-off period for three years as per the BCCI constitution.
He has thus far remained non-committal about his plans. “Aren’t you happy with me at the BCCI,” has been his patent reply when quizzed about his ICC role.
If Shah decides to file his nomination for the ICC chair, he is likely to be elected unopposed, given the BCCI’s clout in the world governing body.
Venue shifted
The ICC has confirmed that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be moved from Bangladesh to the UAE.
The event, scheduled from October 3 to 20, will now be staged in Dubai and Sharjah. The ICC was forced to shift the venue following the recent political turmoil in Bangladesh.
