Former South Africa seamer all-rounder Lance Klusener is set for an important post in Tripura.

The apex council of the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) had met last week and recommended that Klusener would look into “all the categories of the state’s cricket teams”.

Klusener, who played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for the Proteas, had been shortlisted alongside Dav Whatmore for the role. Whatmore, who had coached Baroda in the last domestic season, opted out due to personal reasons and the Tripura body then focused entirely on Klusener.

With his contract with Tripura set to be finalised by next week, Klusener may attend a pre-season camp in Agartala which is likely to begin in the first week of June.

“Hopefully, everything will be finalised with Klusener by next week. As an overall coach, he will be looking after both our junior and senior cricketers,” TCA vice-president Timir Chanda said on Wednesday.

“It’s a 100-day contract with him. He will be with our teams in phases. Each phase could be of 20 or 25 days.

“We plan to hold a pre-season camp here in Agartala in the first week of June and we expect Klusener to be present there,” the TCA vice-president added. Klusener, though, refused to comment on the matter.

Adjudged Player of the Tournament in the 1999 World Cup, the 51-year-old has worked as batting coach of South Africa and Zimbabwe and was the head coach of Afghanistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
