The cricket fraternity paid glowing tributes to Everton Weekes, who died on Wednesday at the age of 95.

Viv Richards, one of the greatest to have played the game and who too hails from the Caribbean, called Weekes a true icon. “Can’t believe the legendary Sir Everton Weekes is no more. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. One of the greatest cricketers from the country. A true icon. Rest In Peace, legend!” Richards tweeted.

Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: “Sir Everton Weekes is no more! Had heard many stories about his batting along with the other Legendary 2Ws. You will be missed Sir. Rest In Peace.”

Weekes formed the famous three ‘Ws’ of the West Indies.

Mike Atherton, who led England in the 1990s, was also disappointed to know of the legend’s passing. “Very sad to learn of the passing of Sir Everton Weekes. A humble man who wore his greatness lightly,” he wrote.

Former Windies pacer Ian Bishop, assessing Weekes and Richards’ batting styles, called the former “more graceful”.

“Viv was a dynamic player, way ahead of his time. You look at Viv’s strike rate in ODIs. It’s in the 90s, which would be the standard protocol now. Viv was a destroyer of bowling attacks, while Sir Everton was more gracelful,” Bishop said during a chat on Sony Sports India’s Facebook page.
