Jamie Smith produced an innings of character and skill as England took control of the third Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston on Saturday.
Smith, playing his third Test, made an attacking 95 and along with Chris Woakes (62) put on 106 runs for the eighth wicket as England took a 94-run lead in response to West Indies' 282.
At stumps on Day 2, West Indies were 33/2 in their second innings, still 61 runs behind.
Joe Root led an England fightback in the afternoon session. He scored 87 as the hosts fought back from 54/5.
Root featured in a 115-run sixth-wicket partnership with captain Ben Stokes that hauled England back from a precarious position. They steadied the innings, taking England to 157/5 at lunch.
Root crossed 12,000 Test runs in the process, only the second player from his country after Alastair Cook to reach the landmark.
Root also went up the ladder in the all-time Test run-getters list, edging past Brian Lara. Lara finished with 11953 runs in Tests.
By crossing him, Root — who now has 12027 runs — became the seventh leading run-scorer in the history of Test cricket.
