Graeme Swann, one of the finest off-spinners in modern-day cricket, feels that having a bowler of the quality of Jasprit Bumrah in their attack could have helped England pose bigger problems for West Indies in the Southampton Test.
However, he also wants England to stop underestimating the Windies and bring Stuart Broad back in the XI for the second Test beginning in Manchester on Thursday.
“I think England really underestimated the Windies, even subconsciously they did so. After the Windies were beaten by India in the Caribbean last year, it was more due to an Indian bowling attack led by Bumrah, who was in unbelievable form.
“India’s pace attack at present is so strong that it can destroy any opponent. In Southampton, England bowlers were fresh, but they didn’t have someone like Bumrah in their ranks. In the Caribbean, I didn’t see bowling of such high standard that Bumrah did. It was incredible bowling by him.
“So England didn’t pay attention to that (India-West Indies) series because they were busy with the Ashes. They didn’t study the Windies team and underestimated them and then picked the wrong team,” Swann said during a chat on Sony Sports India’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
“They should bring Broad back now. Stuart can do a donkey’s work in a Test match. He is a fast bowler who can bowl 25 overs in a day on the spot and not bowl a bad ball. He is a perfect foil for James Anderson, which helps the latter take wickets at the other end.”
