For a moment, it felt like Edgbaston was hosting a T20I with Jasprit Bumrah raining down boundaries. A Stuart Broad over went for 35 runs, the most in Test cricket.

Eighteen years ago, Brian Lara, the then West Indies captain, had smashed 28 runs in a over off South African spinner Robin Peterson, which included four boundaries and two sixes off six balls. In 2013, Australia’s George Bailey equalled Lara’s feat by taking 28 off James Anderson in Perth, but he was behind Lara in terms of boundary count. In 2020, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj too got an equal number of runs in an over, against Joe Root, in Port Elizabeth.

For Broad it was a brutal blow as he relived the horror of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 when India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh smashed him for 36 runs — six consecutive sixes.

Ravi Shastri summed it up well. “I thought I had seen it all... But today (Saturday) what I saw was bizarre... A world record from Jasprit Bumrah, batting at No. 10 as captain of India for the first time... You feel you’ve seen everything but you realise you are still a student in the game,” the former head coach said.

Bumrah went all out against Broad in the 84th over of India’s innings. The second new ball was only a few overs old and James Anderson had just dismissed centurion Ravindra Jadeja and India were 377 for 9.

Bumrah got his first boundary with a top-edged hook over fine-leg and then Broad’s short delivery went over wicketkeeper Sam Billings for five wides. India got seven runs off the next ball as Bumrah top-edged a pull over third man for six and Broad overstepped.

The next three deliveries were hammered for three consecutive boundaries.

Bumrah pulled the fifth legal delivery for a six over deep backward square leg to make it the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket. Broad conceded a single on the last delivery of the over.

The stand-in India captain was not out on 31 off 16 balls with four boundaries and two sixes as India finished on 416.

The innings earned praise and good humour. Sachin Tendulkar shared a photo of Bumrah swinging his bat at a bouncer, eyes closed and with a grin on his face. In the caption, Sachin tweeted: “Kya yeh Yuvi hai ya Bumrah?! 2007 ki yaad dila di (Is this Yuvraj or Bumrah? Reminded me of 2007).”
