Exposure in the overseas leagues and takeaways from them will keep her in good stead going into next year’s Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, India all-rounder Deepti Sharma feels.

With not too many days left for the showpiece event which begins in March, the game-time Deepti is getting in her maiden Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) campaign, playing for Sydney Thunder, certainly works well for her. Alongside gaining valuable experience, she’s also getting a fair idea of the strengths and weaknesses of players who could be in the opposition camp during the World Cup.

“The other Indian cricketers and I are getting to play with and against all those players who could be there in the World Cup too in our rival teams. So we’re getting to know their strong points as well as their weaknesses.

“It thus becomes a tad easier for me to understand what I need to do both as a batter and bowler. So that’s obviously going to help,” Deepti said during a virtual interaction.

The 24-year-old, who bats left-handed and bowls off-break, has decent numbers in her 13 appearances so far in the ongoing WBBL, though Sydney Thunder are placed second from bottom in the standings with 10 points from 14 matches. With the bat, Deepti aggregates 211 at an average of 35.16 and has taken 13 scalps at an economy rate of just over seven.

“Getting to know when you will be sent in to bat or brought on to bowl, you become aware of your position in the team and your adaptability becomes easier,” Deepti emphasised.
