The India women’s cricket team held their nerves in a crunch situation to eke out a four-run win over England in a semi-final clash at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday.
Superb death-overs bowling from Sneh Rana played a key role in the victory and Smriti Mandhana, who herself had a great day with the bat, said that the spell will be remembered for a long time.
Opting to bat, India rode Mandhana’s 32-ball 61 and Jemimah Rodrigues’ 31-ball 44 not out to post a healthy 164/5 in 20 overs.
England looked well on course during their chase, reaching 86/3 at the halfway stage. They needed 48 runs from the last five overs and while it looked achievable, the Indian bowlers tightened the screws to stun the hosts.
In the end, England managed 160/6, with Natalie Sciver (41) and Danielle Wyatt (35) scoring the most runs.
For India, offie Rana was the best bowler with 2/28 from her four overs, though Deepti Sharma too was brilliantly economical conceding just 18 runs in her four overs and taking a wicket as well.Three run-outs also pegged England back.
“In matches like this, roles have to be changed. Deepti’sovers in the middle were important. Rana was amazing, bowling with only three fielders in the deep. That will be remembered for a long time,” Mandhana said after the game.
