West Indies’ steady, calm batting helped them take a healthy 114-run first innings lead over England to hold an upper hand in the first Test here at the Ageas Bowl on Friday.

At stumps on Day III, England were 15 without loss in their second innings, having reduced the deficit to 99.

For the Windies, opener Kraigg Brathwaite top-scored with 65, followed by ’keeper-batsman Shane Dowrich (61). Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase also contributed.

The visitors had an excellent day in terms of reviews as well on the second day, with five of the six decisions going their way. On Friday, however, on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Richard Illingworth got it right on majority of the occasions as their decisions couldn’t be overturned by the DRS.

Earlier, resuming on 57/1, Brathwaite and Shai Hope made steady progress during the first hour. Hope, though, was fortunate that a plumb lbw to Jofra Archer was overturned when the review found that the pacer had overstepped, which turned that into a no-ball.

Hope departed not long after, however, when he attempted to drive off-spinner Dom Bess and edged straight to England captain Ben Stokes at first slip for 16. Stokes finished with four wickets.

Brathwaite’s 125-ball, 184-minute long innings ended when he was adjudged lbw to Stokes with the umpire’s decision standing after a review.

England were bowled out for 204 with Windies skipper Jason Holder taking a career best six for 42.
