I think we’re definitely moving in the right direction with the batting line-up and confidence the guys are getting: RCB skipper

Mahendra Singh Dhoni knows what it takes to win matches in the limited overs format. On Wednesday, the CSK captain felt that poor shot selection let them down. Dhoni said chasing was about calculations while batting first was more about instinct.

“We did well to restrict them to 170-odd runs. I felt in the second half the surface could be better and we had to get off to a good start,” the CSK captain said after losing to RCB.

“Everything was up to the mark and what let us down was the batsmanship. When you are chasing you know what is required and at times you have to curb your instinct and see what really the situation is demanding rather than playing your shots. The shot selection could have been better towards the end,” Dhoni said.

“We had a good start and had wickets in hand, the surface kept getting better but we lost wickets at regular intervals. We can look back at some of the shots, if we take care of those things… chasing is about calculations and batting first is more about instinct.

“We need to keep looking about what went wrong... it is the process that matters rather than where you are positioned in the points table.”

RCB captain Faf du Plessis was obviously very happy about the result since it kept them in the reckoning for the playoffs.

“We definitely needed this victory, just for the confidence in the group. The guys have been doing some good things behind the scenes but you have to do it out in the middle. To put up a decent total today on a wicket with a bit of challenge was great,” the South African said.

“I think we’re definitely moving in the right direction with the batting line-up and confidence the guys are getting. With the bowling department, we’ve been very good throughout the tournament, so it was just a case of backing it up with some good runs.

“I thought 165 was a par score so anything above that would be nice to get. The Powerplay was probably going to be the easiest time to score because the wicket had a little bit of stop to it. They had a good start in the Powerplay, but once we got two wickets, I thought we were excellent,” the RCB captain said.

“The energy in the field was amazing, guys diving all over the place, great catching and some good bowling as well. We’re very lucky to have experienced guys... It’s great for me, when there’s some questions to be asked that I can lean on a really good senior player group.”
