The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) has decided to introduce the red-card system to fight the problem of slow over rates during the upcoming edition of the tournament, starting August 17.

Each team will have 85 minutes to bowl their overs. If the fielding side is behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over, one additional player must enter the fielding circle (for a total of five) and two (for a total of six) if still behind the rate at the start of the 19th over. If the team stays behind the required rate at the start of the 20th over, they will lose a player from the field (selected by the captain) and have six players inside the fielding circle.

The batting team will also be monitored for time-wasting. After a first and final warning from the umpires, the batting team will be given a 5-run penalty for each instance of time wasting.
