Mitchell Starc has an uncanny habit of striking in his first over in a pink ball Test at the Adelaide Oval.
During the pink-ball Test in 2020, he dismissed Prithvi Shaw with the match’s second delivery. On Friday, he did one better trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal leg before with his first ball.
“Yeah, I had the stumps (in my sights) and hit the pads. That’s it. Nothing special. I am still running in trying to attack the stumps, trying to swing it. Some days it works, some days it doesn’t,” the left-arm fast bowler said after his six-wicket haul.
“That’s been my role for a while... to try and make early inroads. Pleased to sneak one past today,” he said.
“Nice to get him (Jaiswal) early. And now we will have to work on him in the second innings.”
The opening day's events worked in Australia's favour and Starc was satisfied. “It's been a very good first day for us with the ball. After that first hour, we were pretty bang on. Nice way to start this Test.
“It is a good way to finish the day. The hardest time to bat is that third session with the brand-new pink ball. To finish one down, particularly from Marnus (Labuschagne) and (Nathan) McSweeney to fight through that and obviously to counter sustained pressure from a quality bowling attack, that was fantastic.”
The Aussie quick was all-praise for 21-year-old Nitish Kumar Reddy's attacking 42 off 54 balls.
Yeah, the game’s changed. I guess that’s partly the T20-era. Some of these guys come up through IPL and there’s no fear. There’s expectation to be good from the get-go, no matter what their age is."
