The BCCI’s strong reservations in hosting two world events in consecutive years helped them retain the hosting rights for the 2021 T20 World Cup on Friday.

Australia, which was supposed to host the now postponed T20 World Cup in October-November this year, will now host the tournament in 2022. India is also scheduled to host the 50-over World Cup in 2023.

The Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI made a strong presentation in view of which the IBC, the commercial subsidiary of the ICC, took the decision “following an extensive contingency planning exercise which has taken into account the health, cricket and commercial impact of Covid-19 around the world.”

According to The Telegraph’s sources, the broadcasters too weren’t very keen on hosting two consecutive events at the same venue. The broadcasters felt it wasn’t “commercially viable” and that went a long way in ICC ruling in India’s favour.

Cricket Australia also couldn’t guarantee their government’s support in 2021.
