The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will probe a series of insulting WhatsApp messages sent to Wriddhiman Saha by a “respected journalist”, who demanded an exclusive interview.
Sources have confirmed to The Telegraph that the BCCI will ask their contracted cricketer to reveal the name of the journalist and initiate action against him. There have been instances of BCCI suspending the accreditation of journalists for varying other reasons.
There is immense pressure on the BCCI to investigate every single detail that has been mentioned in the messages and break if any nexus is at play. President Sourav Ganguly left for London on a scheduled personal visit on Monday and secretary Jay Shah will look into the affairs now.
BCCI will ask Saha to share the messages and then, if needed, seek help from the required authorities to validate their authentication. There is worry if any other current cricketer has been forced to go through such “trauma”.
Saha has already been in the eye of a storm following the selectors’ decision to drop him from the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Saha has received lot of support from former cricketers who have urged him to reveal the name of the journalist. Former captain and head coach Ravi Shastri has asked the BCCI president to intervene.
“Shocking a player being threatened by a journo. Blatant position abuse. Something that’s happening too frequently with #TeamIndia. Time for the BCCI PREZ to dive in,” Shastri tweeted on Sunday night.
