The Netherlands cricket team landed in the city on Thursday evening. They play Bangladesh at the Eden on Saturday.
It remains to be seen how big a crowd this low-key World Cup match attracts. Also, whatever the turnout, there’s a possibility of Bangladesh getting better support.
A couple of Dutch students-cum-artists were in the city and also had a role to play in the Puja pandal of Behala Nutan Dal.
But the duo, Benjamin Pompe and Martyna Pekala, won’t be there at the Eden on Saturday as they left the city earlier this week.
“We heard the Netherlands beat South Africa. They also came close to beating Sri Lanka too but couldn’t win. That’s okay though.
“But we won’t be there for Saturday’s game. Also, we don’t follow cricket that much,” Benjamin said.
That’s understandable as cricket is yet to earn a popular place in the Netherlands’ sporting culture.
What matters more to the Scott Edwards-captained team is the experience they are gathering.
“The World Cup brought us even closer together as a unit,” Dave Bakker, team manager of the Netherlands, told The Telegraph on Thursday.
“Although cricket is a small sport in the Netherlands, we play the game with great passion. And motivation for a World Cup is not a difficult thing at all.”
