Gary Ballance hit an unbeaten 137 that helped Zimbabwe fight back in the first Test against the West Indies at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.

Courtesy the left-hander’s knock that comprised 12 boundaries and a couple of maximums, Zimbabwe posted 379/9 before announcing a declaration in reply to the Windies’ 447/6 declared.

At stumps on Day IV, the Windies were 21 without loss, having extended their overall lead to 89. Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul seemed content with survival, making no effort to push the lead and keep some hopes for a win alive.

Given the Windies opening duo’s approach in the 13 overs so far in their second innings, the Test is meandering towards a draw.

The day, though, belonged to Ballance who, after his move to Zimbabwe following an unsuccessful stint with England, made his first Test appearance in almost six years.

Coming in to bat at No.5, he saw wickets tumbling at the other end as Zimbabwe slipped to 192/7 after resuming on 114/3.

Fortunately, he found an able ally in Brandon Mavuta (56). The duo put on 135 for the eighth wicket that helped Zimbabwe fight back. The Windies bowlers looked out of sorts even against Zimbabwe’stailenders, which made matters easier for Ballance.
