Azeem Rafiq’s sister was named as an alleged racism victim at Yorkshire after he told authorities she was targeted while on work experience at the club.

Amna was referred to as “FP” (Fit P---) by Ashes winner Tim Bresnan during a media day, according to wide-ranging charges brought by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

In a witness statement included in charges against the former England international, Rafiq said he “felt angry and embarrassed” about not saying anything at the time.

“Part of the problem was this sort of language was so common that he did not think much of it at the time,” said ECB lawyer Jane Mulcahy, citing Rafiq’s statement.

As a long-awaited disciplinary hearing into charges began on Wednesday, the ECB detailed a catalogue of allegations that the club had failed to address “systemic” behaviour by “multiple employees”.

Rafiq is the chief witness in charges brought against Yorkshire and seven individuals, but it had not been expected that family members would also be cited in the claims.

Mulcahy explained that Amna was not aware that the players had described her in a discriminatory manner at the time. “He (Rafiq) wanted to protect her and not cause any issues for her in pursuing her dream of a career in cricket,” ECB witness evidence states.

Five of the accused — Bresnan, Matthew Hoggard, and coaches Richard Pyrah, Andrew Gale and John Blain — are refusing to co-operate in a hearing in London.

As a result, in the first of three days of live evidence, Mulcahy detailed a catalogue of unanswered claims against Bresnan, Hoggard and Blain.

Prior admissions of using the term “P---” from Hoggard and Gary Ballance — the latter the only individual to plead guilty — show there was a “prevailing atmosphere” of racist abuse, Mulcahy also alleged.

The ECB’s legal team denied claims by both Hoggard and Bresnan that they were not invited to take part in the investigation.

Allegations against Hoggard include that he “created and/or used” the nickname “Rafa the Kaffir” for Rafiq; said “you P---s are all the same”; used the term “you lot” to refer to Rafiq; and said “TBM” or “token black man” towards Ismail Dawood in 2004 and 2005.
