The West Indies made early inroads through their pacers and made Australia work hard during the third day's play of the day-night Test at the Gabba on Saturday.

Australia lost Usman Khawaja (10) and Marnus Labuschagne (5) to end the day at 60/2, still needing 156 runs to make a clean sweep of their Test summer that saw them rout Pakistan 3-0 and beat the West Indies by 10 wickets inside three days in the first Test at Adelaide.

The Windies could not swell their lead beyond 215 runs as they got bowled out for 193 in the last session after No. 11 batter Shamar Joseph had to retire hurt when he injured his right toe off a searing Mitchell Starc yorker. The visitors were 148/4 at one stage, but lost way because of some careless batting.

Josh Hazlewood picked up 3/23 with his impeccable bowling and Nathan Lyon grabbed 3/42 with Starc and Cameroon Green picking up one wicket apiece.

Brief scores: West Indies 311 & 193 (Kirk McKenzie 41; Josh Hazlewood 3/23, Nathan Lyon 3/42). Australia 289/9 decl. & 60/2 (Steve Smith 33 batting). At stumps, Day III.
