David Warner departed for 99 as Australia lost the fourth and penultimate ODI to Sri Lanka by just four runs at the Premadasa Stadium on Tuesday. For Sri Lanka, this was their first bilateral series win at home over Australia in 30 years, as they now have an unassailable 3-1 lead.

Put in to bat, Sri Lanka were lifted to 258 by Charith Asalanka (110), who slammed his maiden international century and Dhananjaya de Silva (60).

Sri Lanka were wobbling at 34/3 in the 10th over before Asalanka and De Silva’s fourth-wicket stand of 101 laid the platform for a competitive total. De Silva, in spite of being well set, fell off Mitchell Marsh’s bowling. But the 24-year-old Asalanka marched on, propelling Sri Lanka to a 250-plus total before they were bowled out with an over to spare.

In reply, Australia were cruising at 189 for 4 in the 36th over, but the dismissals of Travid Head (27) and Warner derailed the visitors. De Silva struck with the ball too, picking up those two vital wickets that eventually bowled Australia out for 254.

The Aussies needed five to win off the final ball, but Matthew Kuhnemann fell off Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka’s bowling.
