Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun emulated his illustrious father when he hit a century on Ranji Trophy debut against Rajasthan on Wednesday in Porvorim.

Playing for Goa, Arjun, 23, reached his century off 177 deliveries in his first-class debut, the second day of the four-day match.

Sachin had scored his maiden first-class century on debut for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in 1988, against Gujarat, as a 15-year-old. Arjun, a fast-bowling all-rounder, was dimissed for 120. The left-hander slammed 16 fours and two sixes.

Unbeaten on 4 overnight, Arjun walked in with the score on 201 for 5 and stitched together a 221-run partnership with Suyash Prabhudessai, who hit 212 off 416 balls.

At stumps, Goa were 493 for 8 in 163.2 overs.

Arjun had moved to Goa from Mumbai at the start of the season in search of more game time. He had earlier featured in just two T20s for Mumbai.

Kochhar in lead

Karandeep Kochhar, riding on the confidence of having recently sealed his Asian Tour card for next year,got off to a flying start with a six-under 66 to lead on Day 1 of the inaugural SSP ChawrasiaInvitational meet at the RCGC.

Abhinav Lohan shot a 67 to occupy the second place,while Gaganjeet Bhullar fired a 69 to be tied eighth along with Manu Gandas.

PGTI rankings leader Yuvraj Singh Sandhu was a further shot behind in tied 12th position.

Tournament host Chawrasia, Anirban Lahiri and Ajeetesh Sandhu were tied 19th with matching scores of 71.

Shankar Das, too, shot a 71 to be the highest-placed among the city golfers alongwith Chawrasia.

Kochhar, who returned to compete at the Royal after a gap of five years, stuttered initially bogeying the 11th.

But the 23-year-old four-time winner on the PGTI was on a roll after his 30-feet birdie conversion on the 13th.
