Sean Whitehead, a 24-year-old slow left-arm orthodox spinner, has achieved the rare feat of picking up all 10 wickets in an innings of a first-class match.

Whitehead’s record came while he was representing South Western Districts in a match against Eastern Storm in a Division Two game of the 4-Day Franchise Series in South African domestic cricket.

His figures read 12.1-4-36-10, the best in 115 years in South African domestic cricket. He had also taken 5/64 in the first innings to finish with a 15-wicket match haul.

Overall, Whitehead’s figures are the second best in the history of domestic cricket in the African nation, behind leg-spinner Bert Vogler, who took 10/26 for Eastern Province against Griqualand West in 1906.

Though only two bowlers — Jim Laker and Anil Kumble — have taken 10 wickets in an innings in Test cricket, the feat has been achieved many times in overall first-class cricket, with H. Verity’s 10/10, playing for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire in a 1932 County Championship game, being the best figures.

Whitehead, who represented South Africa at the 2016 U-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, is actually an all-rounder.

His 66 was the second-best score in South Western Districts’ first innings score of 242. Eastern Storm made 250 in their first essay. In the second innings, Whitehead was once again the second-highest scorer with 45 as his team totalled 193 to set Eastern Storm a target of 186. But with Whitehead weaving his magic, Eastern Storm’s innings folded for 65 in 25.1 overs and South Western Districts won the game by 120 runs.
