Yashasvi Jaiswal’s nature is to bat aggressively, which he did smashing 17 boundaries and five sixes on Friday to set himself up for what would certainly be a very special double ton.
To hit those fours and sixes, Jaiswal needed to play the sweep only thrice.
Eighty-one runs out of his 179 not out came sans boundaries and sixes, which also reflects the kind of importance Jaiswal lays on strike rotation. The ability to shift gears makes Jaiswal special, believes his personal coach Jwala Singh.
“Even Prithvi Shaw (who has played five Tests, six ODIs and a T20I) has trained under me. But Prithvi can bat in only one gear, which is the third gear. That’s where Yashasvi is different. He’s capable of changing gears as the situation demands,” Jwala, Jaiswal’s local guardian from 2013-22, told The Telegraph from Mumbai on Friday.
“If you want to shine at the international level as a batter, you have to adapt to different situations and conditions. It’s something I’ve always told Yashasvi. ‘I can see you have it in yourself to shine at the highest level, not just perform in the IPL.’ He has listened to me and done what he had to, and that’s paying him dividends,” Jwala added.
“That he didn’t let go another solid start shows he’s learning from his mistakes. And he is a quick learner, which is his advantage,” Jwala emphasised.
