Former Australia opener Michael Slater came down heavily on his country’s government and its Prime Minister Scott Morrison for their decision to block citizens returning home from India.

Slater was doing commentary in the ongoing edition of the IPL before trying to fly back to Australia a week or so back. However, with Australia shutting down its borders till May 15 and not allowing any commercial flights from India because of the Covid-19 surge here, Slater flew off to the Maldives instead.

In a post on Twitter, Slater, who played 74 Tests and 42 ODIs for Australia, said: “If our Government cared for the safety of Aussies they would allow us to get home. It’s a disgrace!! Blood on your hands PM. How dare you treat us like this. How about you sort out quarantine system. I had government permission to work on the IPL but I now have government neglect.”

When some of the comments on his post alleged that the 51-year-old was only motivated by money, Slater shot back: “This is what I do for a living and I have not made a penny having left early.”
