The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will co-ordinate with its state units to ensure that players get skill based training at a local level before the government further relaxes restrictions following the Covid-19-forced lockdown.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday decided to open stadiums and stage matches without spectators which indicates that individual training can take place but a conditioning camp will have to wait.

“Taking into account the restrictions on air travel and movement of people till May 31, the BCCI will wait further before organising a skill-based training camp for its contracted players.

“The Board reiterates that the safety and well-being of its athletes and support staff is paramount and will not rush into any decision that can hamper or jeopardise India’s effort in containing the spread of the virus,” treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal said in a media release.

“In the meantime, the BCCI will study guidelines at the state level and will work in sync with state cricket associations to chalk out a programme for skill-based training at the local level.

“The BCCI office-bearers will continue their interactions with the team management and draw up a suitable plan for the entire team once the situation further improves.”

Cricket behind closed doors is not a viable option but the government’s move will also come as a huge relief to the Board mandarins who are desperately trying to stage the 13th edition of the IPL.

That will however have to wait a while since it will depend on the resumption of domestic and international flights.
