American Jessica Pegula was a model of consistency without any trophies to show for it heading into the Canadian Open, but the world No.3 said she was hungry for more success after ending a stellar week with her first title of the season.
The 29-year-old has reached the quarter-finals or beyond in 9 of her 12 tournaments on the tour this season before coming to Montreal, where she beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 in the Canadian Open final for her third title overall and second WTA 1000 crown.
Pegula beat doubles partner Coco Gauff in the quarters before sealing a second career victory over world No.1 Iga Swiatek to hit top gear ahead of this week’s Cincinnati Open and the U.S. Open beginning on August 28.
“Beating Coco and Iga were two tough wins back-to-back and being able to do that and then come out and play a really clean match was great,” Pegula told reporters.
Pegula became the first American woman to win the Canadian Open since Serena Williams in 2013.
Sinner champion
In Toronto, Jannik Sinner won the Canadian Open for his first ATP Masters 1000 title, beating Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-1.
Sinner, the 21-year-old Italian player seeded seventh, has eight tour victories, also winning in February at Montpellier.
He’s the second Italian Masters 1000 champion, following Fabio Fognini in the 2019 event in Monte Carlo.
“It means a lot. It is a great result,” Sinner said.
