The in-your-face aggression that has become a key component of Team India’s new-found spirit was in abundance during their Lord’s victory and has remained the talking point since.

Did Virat Kohli’s men cross the line or did Joe Root’s England lose the plot in trying to retaliate through short-pitched bowling during the second Test?

Jos Buttler thinks it’s the competitive element that was on display during the dramatic final day. Such show of emotions “sometimes becomes part of the game,” he said.

“It might have been interesting to watch but honestly for me it was about 22 ultra competitive guys on the field trying to win the Test for their country. Most times it’s about ego and a few words being mostly shared in good spirit by guys who are desperate for victory... Unless lines are crossed it can add to the game and as a side we are very much focused on what we have to do,” Buttler said during a chat on Tuesday.

“Virat is an incredibly competitive guy, he loves the competition and the challenge. That’s one of the pleasures of playing against him.. It’s a great battle and he tests you. A privilege to be out there in that competition... We enjoy it since we have incredibly competitive guys in our side as well and it just adds to the fixture.”

Buttler is aware of the pros and cons of playing a five-match series and believes England can make a comeback.

“It’s one of the challenges of Test cricket to play a long series... sub-plots develop as the series goes on and by the end of five matches the best group will win. It tests everyone’s fitness capabilities.

“India are very strong. Yes we are missing some key personnel, really experienced guys… We didn’t really get it right on the last day at Lord’s. As a team we have been in this sort of situation before and we back ourselves to turn it around,” he said.
