Carlos Alcaraz has wowed tennis aficionados around the world and former top-100 player Somdev Somdev Devvarman is no exception.
Asked whether the 19-year-old is under extra pressure given the expectations, Devvarman said: “There is of course pressure, but you need to see whether he is ready for it and the signs so far says he is. I don’t really remember a player who has played with such consistency and skill at this age. The last perhaps was (Rafael) Nadal.
“His results, the top players he has defeated… (Nadal and Novak Djokovic among them) I would say he is definitely in with a chance to win his first grand slam.”
Speaking during a virtual media interaction on Wednesday, Devvarman added that one of the reasons for Carlos’s success is the fact that he has a fantastic support system, led by his coach Carlos Moya, himself a grand slam winner.
He added: “What is almost scary about Carlos is that he is just 19 and he is playing with such abandon. He is ready to take the next step.
“He is also humble. If he can stay healthy he will only get better. Among all the young players who have come up in the last decade or so, he is the most exciting.”
Asked about Nadal’s chances, Devvarman said: “For Nadal to be at his 100 per cent, it will be a huge task. but then again, he is Nadal and you can never write him off.”
The French Open will be telecast live on Sony Six and Sony Ten (2, 3, 4) from May 22.
