Former champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from the US Open due to injury, organisers said on Saturday, after the Canadian suffered a stress fracture in her back.

Spain’s Paula Badosa will also not be taking part as she keeps struggling with her back injury.

Andreescu, who won the tournament in 2019, lost her opening match at the Citi Open in Washington DC last month before going down in straight sets to Camila Giorgi at the Canadian Open.

She appeared to be in discomfort against Italian Giorgi and needed to call a physiotherapist on court.

Andreescu then withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters, saying: "During my match in Washington I started experiencing pain in my back that kept getting worse and I did everything I could the other night in Montreal to play at my highest level.

"All of this led me to undergo medical examinations and sadly the results have revealed a small stress fracture in my back."

Andreescu, 23, was scheduled to face Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko in the US Open first round.

With her withdrawal, Badosa has now missed three of the four majors this year. She took part in Wimbledon, where she retired from her second-round match against Marta Kostyuk.

Badosa also informed that she would not be returning to the court for the remainder of the 2023 season. The 25-year-old was set to face Venus Williams in the first round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She has been replaced by qualifier Greet Minnen.

“After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision,” Badosa wrote on social media.

“We have tried everything together with my team, but the pain is not letting me move forward. Thanks to the people who are still by my side in these hard times. See you next year, stronger than ever,” she added.
