Business time for India

Calcutta/ Kingston: Mahendra Singh Dhoni insists that the celebrations are over and it’s time to get back to business. By that, he probably means that the hangover of the Champions Trophy shouldn’t be in the Indians’ way of putting up a professional performance.

But to be honest, such overwhelming were Team India’s performances in their triumphant Champions Trophy run that the fans wouldn’t mind if the boys in blue dance in the same rhythm.

If they feel they are still in the Champions Trophy mood, Dhoni shouldn’t really mind, because the Shikhar Dhawans have proved that being spontaneous is this young team’s secret to success.

Provided the Indians do manage to remain in that majestic mood, they will be up against a team who have traditionally believed in playing the cricket in a similar fashion. West Indies have started the tri-series in the best possible manner.

They have thrashed Sri Lanka by six wickets on Friday and what is even better is that Chris Gayle looked in ominous form with thundering hundred.

While the Indians are proud champions — of the World Cup and more — the West Indians are no pushovers. After years of hard toil as the back-benchers of international cricket, the Caribbean entertainers are gradually finding their feet once again.

They stunned many winning the World T20 last year and have quite a few impact-making players in their squad. To top that, they will be enjoying the home advantage.

However, somehow, West Indies are not being able to translate their T20 fluency into the one-day version of the game. An experienced captain like Dhoni must be well aware of that and that would give him the confidence to continue their unbeaten run.

With the danger of sounding too cliched one can say that Dwayne Bravo’s team would be eyeing revenge on Sunday after they were handed a thrashing in the Champions Trophy. In that match, played at The Oval, a Dhawan-inspired India had overtaken West Indies’ 233 in just 39.1 overs.

Both the sides are well aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses as their key players have rubbed shoulders in the Indian Premier League more than once.

Interestingly, rival captains Dhoni and Bravo are Chennai Super Kings teammates, while Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle turned out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

On paper, India have the edge. Their openers, Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, are in awesome form and even if that doesn’t work, the middle order comprising of Kohli, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina and Dhoni are capable enough to do the job themselves.

But if Dhawan gets going, not much would be left for the others to do. He seems to get runs as easily as he twirls his moustache.

One can’t be equally confident about India’s bowling line-up, though they did put up a decent show in England.

Ishant Sharma got wickets all right, but never looked threatening, a quality that is a must for the almost swingless wonder that he is. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s problem is exactly the opposite.

The only thing he knows is to swing it both ways, if somehow the swing deserts him, we are yet to find out what else he can do. Umesh Yadav, nowadays, looks more like fast train without brakes. He at times forgets that he has a head as well.

Much then will depend on how good a day Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have. Jadeja, of course, has turned out to be the difference-making player in recent matches.

In fact, in the Champions Trophy match against the Windies, he was all over the Caribbean batsmen snaring five wickets.

For West Indies, it will as usually be more about Gayle. However, the likes of the Bravo brothers and Marlon Samuels do have it in them to win the match for their team.

In Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul, they have two pretty efficient quicks. And yes, there’s one Sunil Narine.

Overall, an entertaining match is on the cards… Whatever may be the result. Bravo is undaunted by the threat posed by a new-look Indian team and said Sunday’s game between the two sides would be a “cracker of a game”.

“I know it is going to be a cracker of a game. We know India are a very good team; it is going to be a very good game. Both teams are very strong in bowling and batting. Let us see how Sunday comes out,” Bravo said.

Match starts: 8pm (IST)
