Mohun Bagan gave Southern Samity a 4-0 thrashing in Tuesday’s CFL Premier Division A match at their home ground.
Logging full points, Bagan have climbed to the third place on the league table with 17 points from 10 matches. Suhair VP and Britto PM scored a brace each for Bagan.
Because of a downpour, the game started 14 minutes post scheduled kick-off.
Bagan, for whom only mathematical chances remain in order to retain the title, wanted to prove a point and started the game on an attacking note. They went ahead as early as in the fifth minute when Suhair’s left-footed grounder found the target.
An Ashutosh Mehta cross, which was chested down by Salva Chamorro, found Suhair unmarked and the striker made no mistake to put Bagan ahead.
Though the ground conditions were slushy, Bagan players managed quite a few passes among them.
Just before the change of ends, it started pouring again and continued for half an hour. Because of the rain, some parts of the ground became waterlogged. It took time to clear the water and the second half started 35 minutes late.
Bagan, however, doubled their lead in the 64th minute. Britto’s through ball found Suhair and the latter scored his second through a right-footer.
Kiyan Nassiri, son of former player Jamshid Nassiri, and Julen Colinas made their Bagan debut in this game. Colinas came in place of Chamorro a quarter into the second half, while Suhair was replaced by Kiyan in the 81st minute.
Colinas played well in difficult conditions and helped Bagan get their third goal. His through pass found Britto, who dribbled past Southern Samity goalkeeper Ishan Debnath and slotted the ball home.
In the injury time of the second half, Britto also scored his second and Bagan’s fourth.
Just as it has been in Bagan’s previous games, Joseba Beitia again played his playmaker’s role to perfection.
