After losing four wickets in the first two sessions, Bangladesh held firm till the end of Day I against the West Indies to take their first-innings total to 242 for five.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican picked up three wickets, conceding 58 runs, to pose a strong challenge to the home team. Left-handed opener Shadman Islam is the top scorer so far for Bangladesh with 59 —his second half-century in the Test format.

“We have got a good start, but we need a few big partnerships to post a big total on the board,” Shadman said.

Liton Das (34) and Shakib Al Hasan (39) will resume proceedings, having added 49 so far in the sixth-wicket stand. Shakib is making a Test comeback after serving a ban imposed by the ICC for failing to report corrupt approaches made to him by bookmakers.

Najmul Hossain, Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim had all managed solid starts by amassing 25, 26 and 38, respectively, but failed to convert them into big ones. While Najmul was run out, Mominul and Mushfiqur were removed by Warrican.
