Jessica Pegula continued her dream run at the Australian Open on Monday with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over fifth seed Elina Svitolina, and took her fighting spirit over to Twitter, reacting to a tweet by ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.
Schefter, a NFL reporter, tweeted: “Jessica Pegula, daughter of Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula, just upset the fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina to advance to the Australian Open quarterfinals. Her run continues.”
Pegula’s parents own NFL’s Buffalo Bills, but she wants to be known for her tennis acumen.
“American Jessica Pegula WTA tour/professional tennis player,” she replied to his tweet, ending her comment with a winking face emoji.
World No. 61 Pegula has been one of the surprise packages in the women’s draw, beating 12th seed Victoria Azarenka in her opening match before racing into the fourth round with quick-fire wins over Sam Stosur and Kristina Mladenovic.
