The city was drenched and it rained penalties at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

After the hat-trick of wins, ATK now have nine points in their kitty from four matches and are at top of the points table. On the other hand, JFC have seven points from same number of matches.

Cyclone Bulbul had its effect almost right through the day with persistent rain and strong gusts of win affecting normal life. The condition of the Salt Lake Stadium ground allowed the match to be played, but with the turf being heavy, both the teams didn’t take much risk from the beginning.

ATK took control of the game gradually and never looked back. Forwards David Williams, captain Krishna and Michael Soosairaj kept on putting pressure on the JFC defence but the hosts couldn’t find the target in the first half.

But after the change of ends, the hosts looked desperate for three points. There were a few close chances with Soosairaj’s shot hitting the side net and Krishna’s shot going wide. But they didn’t have to wait long.

In the 55th minute, when Krishna was bough down inside the box by Tiri, the referee awarded a penalty to ATK. Krishna didn’t make any mistake slotting the ball home from the spot.

Then, in the 68th minute Memo Moura bought down Krishna inside the box and another spot-kick was awarded to the hosts. The Fijian made it 2-0. JFC reduced the margin as Sergio Castel scored from a penalty in the 85th minute.

ATK’s Joby Justin played his first competitive game since February 25 this year. He was serving a six-match ban imposed on him by the All India Football Federation.

Garcia scored the third goal for ATK in the added time of the second half. Garcia had missed an easy chance just before scoring the goal.
