ATK Mohun Bagan got back to winning ways, defeating FC Goa by a solitary goal in an Indian Super League (ISL) fixture at the Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, on Wednesday.

Roy Krishna scored the all-important goal in the 85th minute from a penalty. This was his fifth goal in the competition in six matches.

ATK Bagan started their ISL campaign with three wins on the trot but then they lost to Jamshedpur FC and split points with Hyderabad FC and were desperate to win on Wednesday. Full points from this match helped the Antonio Lopez Habas-coached side to climb to the second spot inthe league table. They now have 13 points from six matches. Mumbai City FC, who have same number of points, are at the top spot by virtue of a better goal difference.

ATK Bagan took control of the game from the beginning. They could have got the lead as early as in the ninth minute. Krishna pounced on a miscued pass from Edu Bedia and played it to Pronay Halder, who chipped the ball for David Williams in the box. FC Goa goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz was alert, rushed out of his line in time and collected the Australian’s lob.

In the 40th minute, Williams almost put ATK Bagan ahead. He chested down a diagonal ball, made space for himself with that one touch and then unleashed a left-looted volley. Nawaz was completely beaten but the ball hit the post.

After the change of ends, FC Goa started attacking and that is what the ATK Bagan coach was looking for. They started getting more open spaces, which suited their plans to counter attack.

ATK Bagan got a penalty as Krishna was brought down in the box by substitute Aibanbha Dohling. The ATK Bagan striker made no mistake to slot the ball home from the spot.
