Boxers Amit Panghal, Jasmine and Sagar Ahlawat won their respective bouts on Thursday to move into the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games, guaranteeing three more medals for India.
Panghal, 26, registered a dominating win over Scotland’s Lennon Mulligan in the flyweight (48-51kg) quarter finals. The Indian southpaw, who had won a silver in the last edition of the Games, earned a unanimous verdict in his favour outsmarting the 20-year-old Scot.
Jasmine beat New Zealand’s Troy Garton by a 4-1 split verdict in the women’s lightweight (60kg) quarters.
Later in the day, Sagar overpowered Seychelles’ Keddy Evans Agnes in the men’s +92kg competition. The 22-year-old from Haryana notched up a 5-0 win in the super heavyweight quarter-final clash. Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Nitu Ganghas (48kg) and Mohammed Hussamudin (57kg) have also reached the semi-finals in their respective categories.
