India suffered an injury scare on Friday with all-rounder Vijay Shankar leaving the training session midway after being hit on his right forearm on the eve of their first warm-up match against New Zealand at The Oval.
Vijay suffered the injury while attempting a pull against left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, who is among the four quicks travelling with the squad as net bowlers.
Vijay, who was part of the second group of batsmen alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Hardik Pandya, immediately walked back to the dressing room.
According to a team source, “Vijay’s condition is being assessed” and a decision on his participation in Saturday’s warm-up tie against the Black Caps would be taken before the match begins.
India would hope Vijay’s injury is not serious, considering Kedar Jadhav is yet to hit full tilt in training. Jadhav, who picked up a left-shoulder injury during IPL XII, was retained in the 15-man squad based on a positive assessment by team physiotherapist Patrick Farhart.
India trained at The Oval on Thursday and Friday, and on both days Jadhav started with light drills under Farhart’s supervision.
On Thursday, Jadhav took some throwdowns but did not bat at nets. On Friday, however, he did do the drills, including some fielding practice, before wrapping it by batting at nets.
It seems Jadhav is most likely to sit out of Saturday’s warm-up game. In that case, KL Rahul could be the one replacing him.
On the other hand, New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham will be out of the warm-up matches owing to a finger injury and will be replaced by uncapped Tom Blundell.
“Tom won’t be available for the first two warm-up games,” captain Kane Williamson confirmed at the captains’ media conference in London.
After the warm-up game versus India, the Black Caps will be taking on the West Indies on May 28 before their opening match on June I against Sri Lanka.
The 27-year-old Latham had picked up the injury during the final practice match against Australia in Brisbane before flying to the United Kingdom.
“We are hoping he progresses nicely and quickly, and we will have to address it as the days go by,” Williamson added. Given the current situation, it is still unclear as to whether the left-handed batsman will be available for New Zealand’s opener.
Coming back to India, the practice tie against New Zealand certainly offers them the kind of challenge that could make them battle-hardened.
Captain Virat Kohli has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to live up to the billing, while his counterpart Williamson also expressed how pleased he was to have the squad back together, with New Zealand having last played an ODI on February 19 against Bangladesh.
