YouTube Music has a biggish following though most people talk about Apple Music and Spotify. The app keeps introducing new features, a new one being live lyrics. With live lyrics, words that are being sung get highlighted, helping you to sing along with the singer.
Can be accessed on the app via iOS or Android, live lyrics have been something that has been around for a long time on other apps. Spotify has been doing it for years while Apple Music has taken it a step further, allowing you to follow lyrics syllable for syllable.
To access live lyrics, first update the app and then while playing a song, head to the Lyrics tab in the Now Playing screen. If your account has received the update, you will notice that the text in the tab is bigger and the line that is being currently sung will get highlighted. The text highlighter will automatically snap to the line that is being sung.
For most songs, the feature works well. But there are some songs, mostly recorded decades ago, that don’t feature lyrics, like Bing Crosby’s Some of These Days or Rosemary Clooney’s Clap Hands! Here Comes Rosie! And for a song like Give Me the Simple Life, the new feature doesn’t work though lyrics are present. It’s not a problem restricted to YouTube Music.
It’s good to see Google adding new features to the app. Though music is the focus of the app, there is also access to music videos. Another good feature is the Related tab when you are playing a song. For example, if you are playing Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E, the app will show similar songs and the recommendation is mostly spot on.
