When the next series of iPhones are unveiled in a few weeks, there could be a big change — the transition from Lighting to USB-C, which in turn may lead to a boost in charging speed. If 9to5Mac has got it right, some of the new models will support 35W charging vis-à-vis 27W speeds on the current iPhone Pro.

The transition was predicated last year by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. EU legislation to standardise mobile chargers on USB Type-C is coming by the end of 2024. The writing has been on the wall for a long time and the legislation will have an impact not only on device manufacturers in Europe but around the world since companies will find it difficult to pursue two types of charging standards — USB Type-C and Lightning port.

Interestingly, Apple has been one of the early champions of USB-C charging. The company went into USB-C mode in 2015 when it released a MacBook with only a single USB-C port and a headphone jack. It should also be remembered that Apple stopped bundling its iPhones with power adapters back in 2020 to try and combat e-waste.

Last year, Apple introduced a new 35W Dual USB-C charger that is capable of recharging all current iPhone models at full speed.
