Google is set to host its Pixel hardware event earlier than expected on August 13 and, as always, there have been more than a few leaks in the past few days. The company will launch the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold but there could be surprises in the form of Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Watch 3. And there is certain to be news around AI-powered features.
Pixel 9 lineup
The high point of the event will be the company’s new smartphones but a surprise can come in the form of three models instead of the usual two. The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will be successors to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro while rumours suggest Google may add a Pixel 9 Pro XL.
The Pixel 9 Pro will, of course, have higher specs than the usual Pixel 9 but the Pro XL, if it arrives, will only be a larger handset. Pixel 9 and 9 Pro displays will measure around 6.3 inches while 9 Pro XL may end up with a 6.9-inch screen.
The cameras should be more powerful. A leaked spec sheet shows the Pixel 9 with a 10.5MP selfie camera, a 50-megapixel main camera, and a 48MP ultrawide lens. There is also indication that the Pixel 9 Pro will have a 42MP selfie camera and three cameras on the rear, including a 50MP main camera, 48MP ultrawide lens and 48MP telephoto camera.
It won’t be surprising to spot a G4 Tensor chip on the new models while Pixel 9 may come with 12GB of RAM. Another rumour: Addition of Samsung’s Exynos 5400 modem that may power a satellite SOS feature similar to newer iPhones.
Unfolding the Fold
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to get taller and slimmer (like all foldable phones are becoming). A design change may come in the form of a squircle-shaped camera housing on the rear of the device. The 6.3-inch cover display will keep an 8-inch inner screen company.
A leaked specs sheet shows the G4 Tensor chip, a 10MP front-facing camera, with a 48MP main camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide lens, and a 10.8MP telephoto sensor on the back of the phone.
Buds and Watch
It has been long since the arrival of Pixel Buds Pro, so expect a refresh with a small wing tip that sticks out from the side of each bud. What about the wrist? There are renders of the Pixel Watch 3 floating around. It may come in 41mm and 45mm options.
